Essential Driver Training in Ireland: A Beginner's Guide to EDT Lessons

October 06, 2026

Getting your learner permit is an exciting step, but it also raises an obvious question: what happens next?

For most first-time car learner permit holders in Ireland, the answer is Essential Driver Training, usually called EDT.

EDT is not simply a set of driving lessons that you take and forget about. It is a structured programme designed to help learner drivers develop safe driving habits and understand how to handle different road situations.

The RSA states that standard EDT consists of 12 one-hour sessions with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Reduced EDT may apply to some drivers with foreign licences.

If you are looking for Essential Driver Training lessons in Tallaght Dublin, Next Level Driving School provides structured EDT training for learners at different stages.

What Is Essential Driver Training?

Essential Driver Training is the mandatory driver training programme for most learner drivers in Ireland.

The RSA introduced EDT to help learners build the skills and behaviours needed to drive safely. The standard programme contains 12 sessions covering different aspects of driving, from vehicle controls and positioning through to anticipation, traffic management and night driving.

The sessions are delivered by an RSA-approved driving instructor.

After each EDT session, your instructor records the training, and your progress can be checked through the RSA's MyEDT system.

That record is important.

You need to make sure your required EDT sessions have been completed and correctly uploaded before taking your practical driving test.

Why EDT Matters

There is a temptation to think of EDT as something you simply have to get through before the real learning begins.

That is the wrong way to look at it.

The lessons are there to help you build habits that will stay with you after you pass your driving test. The RSA says EDT is intended to provide a strong foundation for safer driving by addressing skills, attitudes and behaviours that matter on the road.

The better you use the sessions, the more useful they become.

What Happens During EDT Lessons?

The 12 sessions cover different areas of driving.

The RSA syllabus includes topics such as:

EDT area	What you are working on
Vehicle controls	Understanding and safely operating the car
Road positioning	Placing the vehicle correctly
Changing direction	Turning and handling junctions
Progression	Choosing an appropriate speed
Anticipation	Seeing potential hazards early
Sharing the road	Dealing safely with other road users
Traffic	Managing busy road situations
Speed management	Choosing safe and appropriate speeds
Driving calmly	Building controlled driving habits
Night driving	Handling reduced visibility

The exact progression will depend on your ability and the requirements of the EDT programme.

Your instructor should also give you feedback on what to practise between sessions.

Do I Need All 12 EDT Lessons?

For standard EDT, yes.

The RSA confirms that learner drivers must complete all 12 EDT sessions before they can sit the driving test. Those sessions also need to be uploaded to the MyEDT system.

There are exceptions.

Some drivers who hold a foreign licence may qualify for reduced EDT. In that situation, the programme can involve six sessions, depending on the outcome of the application.

If you think reduced EDT might apply to you, check your eligibility with the relevant RSA/NDLS process rather than assuming.

Choosing an RSA Approved Instructor

This is an important part of your EDT.

Only training completed with a currently approved ADI counts towards the EDT programme. The RSA advises learners to check their instructor's current approval when arranging and attending EDT sessions.

A good instructor should also be someone you can learn from comfortably.

Technical knowledge matters, obviously. So does teaching style.

Next Level Driving School says its instructors are RSA-approved and experienced, with a patient, hands-on approach to learner training. The school is based in Tallaght, Dublin.

If you are searching online for a driving instructor near me, check more than just the price. Look at the training offered, the instructor's qualifications and whether the lesson structure suits your experience.

How to Get More From Your EDT Lessons

Turning up for 12 lessons is only part of the job.

The RSA recommends practising between EDT sessions so that the skills covered in one lesson have time to settle.

If you have access to a suitable sponsor and vehicle, use that time wisely.

For example, if your instructor has been working on observation at junctions, practise that rather than spending every session simply driving around familiar roads.

After each lesson, ask yourself:

What did I struggle with today?

Then work on that.

It sounds simple, but it makes a difference.

Learner Driver Tips That Actually Help

Do not wait until the week before your test to start thinking about confidence.

Build it gradually.

Keep your lessons reasonably consistent where possible. Try not to leave long gaps between sessions unless there is a good reason. Ask your instructor to explain mistakes rather than simply correcting them for you.

And practise outside the lesson when you can.

You also need to study away from the car. The RSA recommends using the EDT booklet and Rules of the Road as part of your preparation.

Driving is practical, but knowledge matters too.

When Should You Start Thinking About the Driving Test?

You do not need to wait until EDT is finished before thinking about your test.

However, completing EDT does not mean you are automatically test-ready.

Your first learner permit generally has to be held for at least six months before you can take the practical test, and the required EDT sessions must also be completed and recorded.

That gives you time to build experience.

Use it.

The RSA recommends continuing to learn and practise while waiting for the test.

Can I Take Extra Driving Lessons?

Absolutely.

In fact, many learners benefit from additional driving lessons beyond their mandatory EDT sessions.

Extra lessons can be used to improve particular areas such as roundabouts, parking, reversing, road positioning or independent driving.

They can also be useful if you have taken a break from driving.

Next Level Driving School offers additional support including pre-test and refresher driving lessons alongside EDT.

EDT and Automatic Driving Lessons

EDT applies whether you are learning in a manual or automatic car.

If you choose an automatic, you still need to develop the same core road skills.

You will need to understand observation, positioning, speed control, junctions, roundabouts, anticipation and safe decision-making.

The automatic transmission simply changes how the car handles its gears.

Next Level Driving School also provides automatic driving lessons in Dublin for learners who prefer an automatic transmission.

What Happens After EDT?

Once your EDT requirements are complete, keep practising.

This is where many learners either build real confidence or lose momentum.

If you are approaching your driving test, pre-test lessons can help identify the areas that need attention. A mock test can also show you what it feels like to drive without the usual lesson prompts.

The aim is to reach the point where you can make safe decisions independently.

That is what matters on test day.
